Its a familiar situation: the raincoat slowly opening, horrified screams, angry tentacle waving around.....what? Well its familiar to Jackie Estacado, star of the new PS3 game The Darkness. Based on Garth Ennis' comic, The Darkness of the title is a malevolent force which posseses Jackie the night before his 21st birthday. It enables him to summon and control demonic creatures, survive gunshots and spew razor-toothed tentacles.

The disclaimer with Jackie's newfound powers is that they only work in the dark - meaning he operates best at night. But in gameplay terms I'm also expecting to have to create dark by knocking out lights. using smoke grenades and so on.

In addition to his demonic abilities, Jackie's previous employment as a Mafia hitman means he's also comfortable with conventional weapons. And he's going to need them as he battles uncle Paulie for controll of the Francetti crime family. The games due out early next year, with online play also confirmed. Oh, one other thing: If Jackie inpregnates a woman he dies instantly. Thats the devil for you.. gives one hand, takes away with the other.

These guys are on your side, which is a relief...
